Certainly there were better ones than the establishment of a religious state that guaranteed permanent warfare. It is ironic that Zionism was born in the same place and time as proto-fascist nationalisms. I am by no stretch of the imagination arguing for moral equivalence, of course. My partner, by the way, is a Zionist of the left.

Would love to hear specific ' better solutions, especially considering what happened during WW2. I guess those european Jews who managed to survive should have simply returned to their homes.

The Palestinian Arabs were disenfranchised in the 1948 Nakba, even those that did not fight in the war. Whether you like it or not, that guaranteed perpetual war. A better solution would have been to live together, to share the land. Obviously.
